Getting a space prepped for a recording session takes a considerable amount of time. If you’re recording clients, or guest musicians, or just helping out a friend, always try to ask for a specific tech plot in advance so you can plan accordingly. There’s nothing that will suck the inspiration and energy right out of the room more than waiting around to set up mics and inputs when the musicians are already done setting up their gear.
The evolution of bass continues to this day. Now, let’s check out that classic prosumer drum machine from Japan — the Roland TR-808 — and, specifically, the iconic subby sound of its beloved kick drum.
A mere mortal bass player might have connected the V chord to the VI- by playing the note in between the roots of each. But Paul McCartney starts the sequence two beats early, playing the root of the V and going down a half step before his three-note climb, resulting in a five-note run that fills out the entire gap in the vocals. Of course, little did I know at the time that this famous mop-top had gone on to be one of the most influential bass players ever.

The music becomes frantic and highly directional. It is pointing towards a piu’ che sforzatissimo (sfff) octave double-stop in the low register, followed by the apparition of silence, which contributes to hold back the accumulated energy for a moment (2:03). It is this moment of silence which creates a striking contrast with what follows: A powerful “quadruple-stop” (marked with “tutta la forza” — or, “with utmost strength” — and “ferocissimo” — “very ferocious”) in which five octaves divide the notes in the left and right hands (2:09).
Music should be something you’re desperately passionate about if you want it to be your career, but if you don’t convert that passion into real work and goal-oriented planning, chances are nothing is going to happen for you. So set aside hours to get things done, make a list of goals, and start putting in the work whether it feels fun and rewarding or boring and forced.

Known as “the kiss heard round the world” during Madonna’s mashup performance of “Like a Virgin” and “Hollywood” at the 2003 VMAs, something pretty unexpected happened when all three divas were onstage together.
