If we can remember the note names in the Fret 5, as well as the open strings (Fret 0), we’ve already got two places on the guitar to serve as familiar “home bases.” That’s a pretty good start! Now let’s create even more reference points with very little extra effort. We’ll start by looking at the 6th and 5th strings.
By now, you’ve probably heard us shouting from the rooftops about our new and improved customized mentorship program, the Headliners Club — or as we like to call it, our “build-your-own-course course.”

If you sit down with pen and paper in hand and find that no new ideas are coming your way, consider a fresh perspective in your writing process. If you are used to writing your songs by starting with just an acoustic guitar and vocals, try opening your mind by starting on the piano instead. If you usually start with a melody in mind but just can’t seem to find the right tune today, start by looping a beat or groove instead. With the great variety of affordable recording and composing software on the market today, you can have a wide palette of sounds at your fingertips and no longer be limited to just the instruments that you own or have the ability to record at one time. If the idea of recording software makes you anxious, you can get started with something as simple as Apple’s Garageband if you are a Mac user or FL Studio on PC.
Like everyone in the music biz, mixers and producers have a reverence for the giants whose shoulders they stand on. We love to learn from the greats and, in this book, journalist and engineer Howard Massey sits down with 37 of them to record their hard-won insights. From Sir George Martin to Phil Ramone to Alan Parsons, we’re treated to intimate insights into how these producers makes great records and what makes each of them tick. Many of the common lessons here we knew already — such as the importance of getting the best performance over fixing things during the mixing process — but there’s real value in the way that these sentiments and lessons are articulated differently by each interviewee.
Whitney Houston was a definitely a great singer and an animated, entertaining performer, sure; she makes the song glimmer, but that’s not the only ingredient. Black Rooster’s Cypress TT-15 guitar amp head is an emulation of the Orange Tiny Terror amplifier, and is great for creating distorted lead guitar tones when you’re recording your guitar direct in. I find that it even works nicely on bass guitar and lead synths, especially when you don’t want your track to sound predictable. It has very simple functions, but it’s creatively playable and easy to dial in a great tone.
Finally, don’t apply blending effects (reverb, chorus, delay) too heavily in the mix as they may stand out much more noticeably after mastering boosts volume and brings out details in the sound.
